Hi!
You can learn to sketching on their own (for example, as Hussein Al-Attar). Many of the world-renowned colleges do not teach drawing. Colleges mainly provide the motivation, competition, contacts with employers.
The most important for you - learn to draw perspective and volume. Start with this tutorial: http://forums.sijun.com/viewtopic.php?p=272300
Try as much as possible to draw a pen and pencil. Do not use a computer and do not paint the sketches before you can properly draw the "frame".
You should draw a few hours a day. Next it will be easier.

I decided about a year ago that I really wanted to get into this field. I studied Japanese in high school and university and have wanted to go back to Japan ever since so I did some research and found a school called Tokyo Communication Arts. Attending it would fulfill two of my dreams for how I want to spend my life. I also started teaching myself to design cars. I have a few pictures uploaded on my profile. It's not great but for a self-taught amateur with no art background I don't think I'm hopeless. By the looks of TCA's website they seem great and I contacted one American who attends the school, loves it and has encouraged me to apply, but I wanted to see if I could get as much advice as possible preferably from people in the industry but also anyone in school for car design would be helpful as well. I spioke with one professional designer who actually somewhat discouraged me from it, and recommended English and German schools (Though I'm not really willing to relocate to England or Germany). As someone who has already been through undergrad I know that, at least in my experience, who you know and what school you went to are usually more important than your talent and the degree itself. So does this school have any kind of reputation in the industry? Do you think it would be basically a waste of money for me, as an American to attend this school, or any design school in Japan for that matter? Do you think being bilingual would be a benefit to me in this industry? Do you think since I'll be 25 this year that perhaps it's a little late for me to just be starting? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer. It is all greatly appreciated.
